Wardway Ready-Cut Construction Saves One-Third to One-Half Carpenter Work MACHINE labor replaces hand work in building Wardway Ready-Cut Homes. One man with the help of the wonderful electrically driven machines in the mill does the work of ten carpenters on the job. That in a nutshell is the secret of the sav- ings of the Wardway system. It is the old story of quantity production by machine versus individual labor by hand. Not only time is saved, but lumber. It has been calculated by experts that an aver- age of 17 per cent of the lumber delivered to erect a house the old way was wasted. Short ends, mistakes, unusable lengths, cause a large addition to the cost. Through scientific cutting we have reduced this waste to less than two per cent. This saving alone covers the entire cost of cutting the mate- rial in the mill. Wardway System Eliminates Mistakes Study the illustration at the right. Note the great number of pieces necessary to build a house — the complicated angling cuts- — and remember an average of three cuts are made in each piece of lumber that goes into a house to fit it into place. It means not only a huge amount of labor — very expensive labor — if done by hand, but in- numerable chances for costly mistakes. The Wardway Ready-Cut System of exact measure- ments and scientific cutting eliminates all chance for mistakes. Each piece is cut exactly according to the architect's drawing, accurate to the sixteenth of an inch. Each piece is inspected by an expert and clearly marked with a printed stencil to correspond with the same piece shown on the plan. Your carpenter simply takes the piece the plan calls for, slips it into place and nails it up. It fits per- fectly — cannot help it — no chance for error. The lumber as specified is furnished in standard mill-run lengths which must be cut to fit by the carpenter. IN EXTERIOR appearance this home preserves the "craftsman" note so widely- sought in bungalow planning. The wide porch extending beyond the house line adds much to the attractiveness of the appearance and even more to the living comfort of the home. The boxed-up rail makes it easy to screen the porch when it serves as an outdoor living room. The wide, low eaves insure plenty of shade and keep out all but the hardest of driving rains. The living room and dining room are joined by a cased opening, giving each room the advantage of the other while still preserving each as a separate room. Two windows in each room allow plenty of light and there is ample wall space for furniture. Much thought has been spent in planning the kitchen arrangement to make it most practical and convenient. "The Rochelle"— Material Supplied Either Ready-Cut or Not Ready-Cut Every Desirable Featurein This Colonial Home TO RETAIN the true Colonial style in the small home has always been a problem to test the designer's utmost skill. You will agree that our architects have succeeded admirably in "The Rochelle." The exterior has all the charm and simplicity of the genuine Colonial home, which enjoys such a well deserved popularity. Built low to the ground, the Rochelle has a particularly inviting appearance with its hooded entrance, shuttered windows and shingled walls. The wide dormer, the brackets supporting the cornice and the open rafter ends, are details which add greatly to the charm of this design. The interior arrangement leaves nothing to be desired. The handling of the outside walls is particularly worthy of comment. They are sided up to the belt course, which incidentally takes the place of the top casing of the window frames. From thence to the open cornice, clear red cedar shingles are used. This gives a variety of effect which is especially pleasing on a rather plain exterior. The front door opens directly into the splendid living room and a cased opening leads on into the dining room. Both of these are fine light rooms of excellent size and proportion. A door leads from the dining room into the center hall which opens into the first and second bedrooms and the bathroom. A linen closet also opens off this hall, such as is shown on Page 52. This linen closet is furnished complete with all shelves, drawers, doors and necessary hardware, and contains sufficient room for all bedding and linen. Each of the bedrooms has its own closet. To this advantage is added the maxi- mum of room and the greatest possibilities for convenient arrangement. Before studying the floor plan of our "Montvilie" home, note the little architectural touches which make it dis- tinctive. The broad eaves on the dormer, house and porch are the dominating note. It delivers all the heat possible through the register allowing very little to escape through the chimney. It will burn hard or soft coal or wood with equal efficiency. The ease of instal- lation is another important feature for anyone can install it in a short time. A complete set of directions is included with each furnace. The Radiator is of heavy cast iron which is more service- able than steel because it will not warp or leak. Windsor Radiators are properly proportioned, wide, deep and abso- lutely gas tight. The Combustion Chamber is made of heavily corru- gated cast iron, generous in size so that gases will be burned properly before entering the radiator. Note in the picture the wide, deep, gas-tight cup joints which prevent the escape of gas and dust into your living rooms. The Firepot is of heavy cast-iron with deep corrugations which increase the heating surface, thereby saving coal. A deep, gas-tight cup joint connects the two sections of the firepot. The Revolving Triangular Grates are hung in pairs with two sides exposed to the air and the third side to the fire. This adds greatly to the life of the grates which will burn all fuels and hold a bright, clean fire. The Doors are large. An important feature. Easy to fire and easy to clean. They are carefully ground to fit closely, permitting no air to enter the furnace, except through the draft door. This assures absolute control over the fire. The Ashpit is wide and deep, with a large door which makes the removal of ashes an easy task. The ashpit draft door is made large to allow the entrance of plenty of air for proper combustion. Plenty of cold air prolongs the life of the grates. Casings, Inner and outer casings are of galvanized iron. The inner casing is lined with asbestos in addition to a lining of deeply corrugated tin, which reflects the heat and sends the warm air into the house instead of radiating it into the basement. The Hood is adjustable for any basement up to eight feet. The inner hood is lined with asbestos, keeping all heat within inner casing.
